Season's Greetings graphic2007 Year in Review

What an amazingly fast summer and fall we've had! It seems like it was only a day or two long! We moved to our new facility, we met so many new friends and so many people came and took home their new best friend. We have increased our horse herd to a number that is now among the largest in the world and training is more fun than ever.

New trainers have arrived, each bringing new talent to our already celebrated training program. Our summer babies are already weanlings and the mares are big with new life for the coming spring.  We have so many beautiful trail horses ready to go to anyone looking for a terrific trail partner or a horse that is now ready to go into just about any field they could dream of.

Our safety-training program has turned out some of the best horses and it just keeps getting better. Winter brings so many opportunities to have fun on horseback but we're all really looking forward to spring when we can ride with the Montana Back Country Horsemen.

We especially wish to thank the owners of Mountain Magic Ranch, Pat Huemoller and Dick Hartmann, for providing us with this very unique and special training opportunity and for always being so willing to listen to all of us. We also thank Pat and Dick for coming all the way to Montana to have a Christmas party just for us. So for now I must say so long and remember friends, you are always welcome to come find your dream horse and ride the ranch with us so you can really see why we named Mountain Magic Ranch. May all your riding be fun and safe.

10 F.A.Q.'s about Rocky Mountain Horses

     1. Q: What is a Rocky Mountain Horse?

A: A Rocky Mountain Horses is a rare breed that developed on the plantations of the South but is deeply rooted in breeds such as the Spanish Mustang, Icelandic Horse and the Barb. This breed almost became extinct and was recovered by a stallion used for trail rides in the Appalachian Mountains, Old Tobe. Tobe known for his extremely calm temperament, superb conformation and excellent overall characteristics made his offspring highly sought after.

     2. Q: What is a Gaited Horse?

A: A Gaited horses is a type of horse with a naturally developed stride made to create a smooth effortless ride for the horse as well as for the rider.

     3. Q: What makes a Rocky better than other breeds of horses?

A: Rockys not only can walk, trot, and canter like all other horses but they also have an ambling gait which means that at all times (fast or slow) there is contact on the ground with one foot, creating a non-jarring, non-bouncing smooth massaging ride for the rider.

     4. Q: When do you start training?

A: The babies are born in pasture with minimal human contact, we let the horses be horses in pastured herds until two years old, then we bring them in for our Natural Training Program.

     5. Q: Do I have to have special training for my Rocky?

A: Special training is not needed. We train using Natural Training techniques rooted in the Parelli methods.

     6. Q: Do Rockies require special equipment or modified shoes?

A: Rockys are no different than other horses in the sense that you can use English, Western or Australian tack on your Rocky Mountain Horse, also special shoes or trimming is not required when owning a Rocky. Rockies have some of the strongest feet compared to all other horses and are very sturdy and sure footed.

7. Q: Do I ride a gaited horse differently from non-gaited horses?

A: Yes, riding in gait is slightly different from riding at a walk, trot or canter. We offer a free lesson in gait as well as handling your new gaited partner when you purchase a Rocky Mountain Horse from Mountain Magic Ranch.

     8. Q: What makes a Rocky different form other gaited horses?

A: Rocky Mountain Horses are strong, versatile, sound, don't have joint problems, have strong feet, large bones and the temperament of a Golden Retriever. They also excel in everything from the trail to the show ring.

     9. Q: Why should I own a Rocky?

A: Ever dreamed of owning the perfect horse? A horse that doesn't spook at leaves rustling in the wind, stands ground tied, is great with the farrier, stands for bathing, loves to be with you when you're just exploring the world, curious about new objects, walks when asked, stops when asked, gaits when asked, does what he/she is asked willingly and is a true partner to you!

10. Q: Why should I purchase a Rocky from Mountain Magic Ranch?

A: Here at Mountain Magic Ranch we hand-pick our mares for individual stallions in our natural breeding herds, to ensure that you are getting the best temperament, disposition, conformation, size, color and gait that money can buy and at a very reasonable price. Water-crossing, side-passing and technical trail training with safety as our main focus make our Rockys the best trail horse possible. If this sounds like the horse you have been looking for, stop looking and come find your new best friend at Mountain Magic Ranch.

Tips from MMR's trainers

D: Most horse related accidents happen when people are mounting or dismounting. Make sure your horse is prepared and willing for you to mount or dismount. You should be able to see the eye of your horse from the side you will mount or dismount on. If you cannot see the eye use your rein or rope halter to tilt the horses head toward you. Make sure the horse is willing to stand still and let you mount or dismount.

J: My tip is about horse psychology. How do you know when your horse is learning, understands, is calm and paying attention? Horses have many different ways to "talk" or communicate with you and every horse is different. With that said, every horse (no matter what breed) will exhibit five simple signs to give us the answers. These five signs of relaxation or understanding are as follows: 1) Lowered head, 2) Licking lips, 3) Cocked leg, 4) Deep breath or exhale and 5) Soft half closed eyes. Once we understand what they are telling us then we can insure a safe and confident experience.
